About LGMOA Spausdinti El. paštas

altThe Association of Lithuanian Science Olympiads (LGMOA) is an organization that unites young scientists, professors, university students and former science Olympiads participants. They all joined the Association to share their experience, to motivate and encourage Lithuanian youth to get involved in natural and biomedical science as well as to choose science for their studies. Along with the Lithuanian Ministry of Science and Education and Lithuanian Student Information and Technical Creativity Center LGMOA takes part in organizing national science Olympiads.

Members of the organization are commonly called “The Orange Team”. This movement started 8 years ago with a purpose to make science Olympiads so attractive, memorable and interesting that the participants would be willing to go back there every year.  To earn their place in one of national science Olympiads they had to study harder every year at the same time raising the bar for all pupils.  As a result only the very best students had an opportunity to participate in national science Olympiads and only the best of the best went to international competitions. The success of this movement was proved by increase in number of bronze, silver and gold medal awards in international Olympiads.

Activities of LGMOA began with the organization of science Olympiads but after those students, who participated in orange team’s created events joined Association it was not enough. Former international Olympiads award winners helped professors in these Olympiads preparation camps, founded the Distant Chemistry Olympiad, biologists organized self-sufficient learning group “BioSA”. LGMOA is also the reason why Lithuanian delegation started participating in International Biology Olympiad, International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) and European Union Science Olympiad (EUSO). Since there was a need of a student selection system for IJSO and EUSO the Association founded the Lithuanian Science Olympiad. Although there was a lot of organizing and tutoring activities some LGMOA members started a social project to help orphanage pupils study, improve their communication skills and motivate them to be interested in science.  Between Olympiad seasons our members visit province schools to arrange Science events. They prepare amazing physics, chemistry and biology experiments to show the class that science lessons can be fun. Since 2007 LGMOA joined an international movement MILSET Europe, uniting organizations working at the promotion of science and technology education for the youth. One of MILSET’s events – International Summer Science Camp (ISSC) was organized by LGMOA in Vilnius in 2010.

During the 8 years of existence a lot of LGMOA members took part in developing Lithuanian science education. At the time there are more than 60 active members who are united by the main aim of the organization – to help raise a versatile person, who would not only be an expert at his field, but also a public-spirited, active, comprehensively sophisticated member of the community.
